What Causes A Skull Splitting Sinus Headache

Sinuses are cavities on the skull located around the nose, eyes and forehead. Sinuses develop while a fetus is in a womb and continues to grow until an individual reaches 20 years old. They help humidify the air that you breathe while filtering air.

More than air filtration, sinuses contribute to the strength of your skull. It also helps our voice resonate. But more importantly, they help produce mucus and just like the nose have microscopic hairs called cilia, that filter dirt in the air that we breathe.

Headaches occur when the connective ducts around sinuses are swollen or inflamed. Pressure builds up as sinuses cannot drain out properly. With increased mucus and fluid secretion the lining of the sinuses swell up. This increased fluid pressure is what we call a sinus headache. The inflammation on the other hand is what we call as sinusitis.

There are several causes of sinusitis like air pressure and temperature changes, sinus infections, cold viruses, and allergic reactions. But other than taking regular medications, there are other means on how to relieve sinus pressure.

Get a bowl of boiling water and add some raw, cut onion into it. Put a towel over your head and the bowl to prevent the vapors from escaping. Then breathe the steam while the water is hot. These aromatic vapors open up the sinus passageways and alleviate fluid pressure. Other than onion, you can use 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil. If your sinusitis is based form a viral or bacterial infection, several drops of tea tree oil can do the job.

Eating some spicy food also helps relieve pressure from the sinus. Capsaicin in spicy food like peppers helps on the pressure inflammation. It also improves circulation around the face.
You can also apply some acupressure to relieve the pressure. To do this, press your index fingers at the middle of your eyebrows, massage the area in a circular motion for 15 seconds, then gently move your fingers towards the area between your eyebrows and continue massaging them. Repeat this acupressure massage until you get relieved.

Sinus pillows are not just effective remedies but also feel great to use. These pillows contain rice of flaxseed which applies acupressure. More than these there are aromatic herbs that provide soothing effects. Heat the pillow for 15 seconds in a microwave and put it on your sinuses.

Other treatments are cold compresses, humidifiers, drinking lots of fluids, and drinking hot caffeine tea. Do not rely much on medication as nature knows how to relieve sinus pressure.
